India imported 3.35 million tonnes (MT) of steam coal and 1.53 MT of coking coal during the week ended 30 May, taking total coal imports to 4.88 MT, up from 4.73 MT in the previous week.
The increase comes at a time when India's coal sector is facing conflicting signals. At the same time, Coal India reported a decline in production amid a surge in electricity demand driven by an intense summer heatwave.
