India imported nearly 4.73 million tonnes of steam and coking coal during the week ended May 23, underlining how strong power and industrial demand continue to sustain seaborne coal purchases despite New Delhi’s push to reduce import dependence. Steam coal imports stood at 2.92 million tonnes, while coking coal imports reached 1.81 million tonnes during the period.
Indonesia remained the dominant supplier of thermal coal to India, accounting for more than 1.62 million tonnes of steam coal shipments during the week. Australia continued to dominate coking coal flows, supplying over 1.13 million tonnes, reflecting the Indian steel sector’s structural dependence on imported metallurgical coal.
