Coal Watch: India’s coal imports rise as stronger coking shipments offset weaker thermal arrivals

India imported 4.00 MT of coal during 6–12 September, with coking coal shipments climbing sharply to 1.79 MT, offsetting a decline in steam coal arrivals

India’s coal imports increased during 6–12 September 2026, with combined steam and coking coal arrivals reaching 3.996 million tonnes (MT), up approximately 7.6% from 3.795 MT in the previous week.

The increase was driven entirely by coking coal. Coking coal imports rose 36% to 1.793 MT, while steam coal shipments declined 11% to 2.203 MT.
