India’s coal imports rebounded sharply during 30 August–5 September 2026, with combined steam and coking coal arrivals reaching 3.79 million tonnes (MT), up 38.7% from 2.73 MT in the previous week.

The increase was driven particularly by coking coal, whose imports almost doubled to 1.32 MT, from 0.68 MT. Steam coal shipments also strengthened, rising 20.3% to 2.48 MT from 2.06 MT.

Indonesia remained the dominant steam-coal supplier, accounting for 1.93 MT, followed by South Africa at 0.32 MT and the US at 0.23 MT. In coking coal, Australia led with 645,431 tonnes, followed by Russia at 278,664 tonnes and the US at 193,591 tonnes.
