India's renewable energy sector continues to make significant strides, with solar power emerging as the frontrunner in the country's clean energy transition.
According to the latest data released by the
Central Electricity Authority (CEA), solar energy dominated the power
generation from renewable sources in February, accounting for an impressive 43.55%
of the total renewable energy generation that stood at 23,926 MW.
With a substantial output of 10,421.22 MW, solar energy solidified its position as the leading contributor to
India's renewable energy mix. This robust performance underscores the rapid
expansion of solar installations across the country, driven by favourable
government policies, declining costs of solar technology, and increasing
environmental awareness.
In comparison, large hydroelectric power contributed around
24.78% to renewable energy generation. While large hydro projects have
traditionally been a significant source of renewable energy in India, their
growth has been hampered by environmental concerns and land acquisition
challenges.
Wind energy also made a notable contribution, accounting
for approximately 20.51% of the total renewable energy generation during the
month. India's vast coastline and favourable wind conditions in several regions
have facilitated the development of wind power projects, adding diversity to
the renewable energy portfolio.
Other renewable energy sources, including bagasse, small
hydro, biomass, and miscellaneous sources, collectively contributed smaller
percentages. Bagasse accounted for around 7.21% of the total, while small hydro
and biomass contributed 1.85% and 1.13%, respectively. Miscellaneous sources
contributed 0.96% to the total renewable energy generation.
The dominance of solar energy underscores India's
commitment to harnessing abundant sunlight to meet its growing energy demands
while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As the country strives to achieve its
ambitious renewable energy targets, solar power is expected to play a pivotal
role in driving India towards a sustainable and resilient energy future.
With continued investments in renewable energy infrastructure and supportive policies, India is well-positioned to further accelerate the deployment of solar energy and strengthen its position as a global leader in renewable energy adoption and climate action.
