India’s renewable energy sector is experiencing rapid growth, driven by ambitious targets and robust government policies. With a goal of achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030, the country is attracting significant investments, reducing energy costs, and enhancing energy security. This transition is not only addressing environmental concerns but also creating millions of green jobs, positioning India as a global leader in sustainable energy.

In 2023, the renewable energy sector employed approximately 1 million people. Hydropower alone accounted for over 450,000 jobs, making India the second-largest employer in this segment globally. The solar photovoltaic (PV) sector added close to 320,600 jobs, supported by the installation of 9.7 GW of new solar capacity, ranking India fifth worldwide for new solar installations.

Projections indicate that India will need around 8.5 million jobs in the renewable energy sector by 2050, requiring an estimated investment of $400 billion by 2030. This growth is expected to play a crucial role in shaping India’s economic future, demonstrating that sustainability and economic prosperity can go hand in hand.

Government initiatives are making clean energy more accessible to residential, agricultural, industrial and commercial consumers. These efforts are lowering electricity costs, providing a stable energy source, and reducing reliance on expensive diesel pumps, ensuring long-term savings and sustainability.

India’s focus on producing renewable energy closer to consumption centres is minimising transmission losses and costs, ensuring efficient and affordable power. The country is emerging as a global leader in renewables, showing that economic growth and ecological responsibility can coexist.

The renewable energy revolution is reshaping India’s energy landscape and generating a wave of green employment opportunities. From solar technicians and wind energy experts to engineers and sustainability consultants, thousands are already engaged in renewable energy projects that are powering the future.

India’s renewable energy ambitions are not just transforming the domestic landscape but also setting an example for the world. The country is making strides in wind energy, bioenergy and green hydrogen, further solidifying its position as a renewable energy leader.

As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, the sector is expected to play a critical role in the country’s economic recovery and long-term growth. The rise of green jobs is empowering a new generation of workers while ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
