India’s weekly thermal coal import last week
(03 March to 09 March) stood at a little over 3.5 million tonnes.
Mundra Port stands out with the highest
thermal coal imports of 7,31,779 metric tonness. This indicates Mundra's
significant role as a major entry point for thermal coal imports into India.
Other ports with substantial import volumes
include Dhamra (4,20,812 metric tonness), Gangavaram (3,94,750 metric tonness), and Krishnapatnam
(2,53,957 metric tonness), indicating their importance in facilitating thermal coal
imports.
The significant import volumes suggest a
continued demand for thermal coal in India, driven by the energy requirements
of power plants, industries, and other sectors.
While India aims to transition towards cleaner
energy sources, such as renewables, thermal coal continues to play a crucial
role in the country's energy mix, supporting economic growth and development.
Policymakers may need to focus on diversifying
the energy mix, enhancing energy efficiency, and promoting cleaner alternatives
to reduce reliance on thermal coal imports in the long term.
